As part of the HMAs partnership with our Official Education Partner BIMM, we’re giving a handful of students a chance to gain some first-hand experience of the music industry via the Heavy Music Awards’ own events and processes.

The students work across four courses at BIMM’s London campus – Music Journalism, Music Business, Music Event Management and Production.

Today, we’re meeting Music Business student David Perkins, who will be attending the HMA events to gain experience and contacts in the industry.

On BIMM…
I’m thoroughly enjoying my studies at BIMM. It’s so well rounded and learning about every facet within the music industry whether it’s live, marketing or A&R related is the best thing about the course so far. Currently in my last year, looking back i’ve managed to create and be part of some amazing projects, such as some cool live shows, creating a small label with like minded students and above all, stepping foot into a tough, yet exciting industry.

On the HMAs…
Perhaps the biggest reason why I want to be part of Heavy Music Awards is simply the very nature of the event, that is all things heavy metal. A heavy metal fan myself, I immediately knew it was such a good opportunity to not only be part of something immense, but to broaden my horizons and listen to even more like minded bands! KOKO is also a fantastic venue to hold this event having seen SikTh perform as headliners back in December, which to this day is one of the best shows of 2017.

On your career goals…
I would like to work with bands I truly love and feel passion for, and there is no better feeling that watching a band emerge out of nothing, knowing that you’ve played a small part whether it’s helping to put on a show for them, manage them or intern for a press company that has them in their roster!

On your stereo…
Currently, I’ve been listening to a lot of Obliteration (doom/thrash metal) having picked up their debut album at Crypt of the Wizard. It’s an incredible album and hopefully the bands will come over to London and play sometime! Other than that, I’m listening to a lot of Lamb of God, Machine Head and some Bathory.

Last show you went to…
The last show I’ve been to was Complexity Fest ’18 over in Haarlem, Netherlands in February. SikTh, Hirsch Effekt, Carnifex and many other awesome bands were performing.
